Asli’s mother is afraid of water, but she still comes to the swimming pool for Asli’s sake. She often tells the story of when the family fled the war in Somalia and had to cross the stormy sea to Italy in a tiny rubber boat.
Asli thinks that a swimming pool is nothing like a wild, stormy sea, and she wants nothing more than for her mother to swim with her—preferably in the big pool. When they discover that there is a swimming class for adults, Asli’s hopes are raised. Maybe they really can learn to swim together after all. Now, the only thing left is for Mum to find the courage.
